The Faculty of Social Sciences at University of Nordland is one of Norway's largest centres for education and research in the field of social sciences. The faculty has active researchers in disciplines like sociology, anthropology, history, journalism, political science, social work and psychology. Research done by the faculty takes shape also as applied and cross-disciplinary projects. Several researchers at the faculty participate in international research networks. There is a close cooperation between the Faculty of Social Sciences and Nordland Research Institute.
About 1500 students are registered on the faculty's 30 different study programmes. The faculty offers bachelor programmes in social work, sociology, political science, circumpolar studies, history and journalism. We offer master programmes in social work, rehabilitation, sociology, history and politics and social development. The faculty also offers a PhD programme in sociology.
The research and teaching staff consists of 60 scholars and 10 research fellows. Among the research topics and research areas covered are:

- Gender, ethnicity and self-image

The dean is Hanne Thommesen (Hanne.Thommesen@uin.no). Faculty director is Elin Sommerli (Elin.Sommerli@uin.no). As shown in the survey below, the faculty is divided into six units, each led by a section manager.
